STEP 3: ADJUST AND SAVE AS ADOBE 98. Once the image is in the default RGB space, adjust the image as needed in RGB before converting to CMYK. RGB color adjustments offer many benefits over CMYK adjustments. It is also a good idea to save a copy of the now adjusted RGB image for future use. Make sure the “Embed Color Profile” is selected.
To convert your RGB document to CMYK using Adobe Illustrator, simply navigate to File -> Document Color Mode and select CMYK Color. This will change the color format of your document and restrict it to shades that are exclusively within the CMYK gamut. The following is just a written overview.
If you want to convert an image from RGB to CMYK, simply open the image in Photoshop. Then go to Image > Format > CMYK. Download and install the Adobe PDF color profile and preset from here before saving the PDF. Instructions are included with the download. After that, go to File > Save As. You can change the color mode of a document, after a file is created, by choosing File > Document Color Mode and then selecting either CMYK or RGB in the menu. Simply click on Window > Document Info. A panel will appear that shows not only which color mode (CMYK or RGB) but will also show the profile (eg Coated Fogra). When I changed the images to CMYK in Photoshop, I also converted the color profiles to match the profile that the printer required. After replacing the RGB raster images in the Illustrator file, I changed the color profile of the Illustrator file to the one required by the printer, then saved the file as a pdf.
