In E46's with a production date after 4/2001 through 8/2002 have the LF-30 power steering pump that uses ATF, and models with a production date of 3/2001 or earlier uses the LF-20 pump that uses CHF11S. The GM6, aka GA6L45R, uses Dexron VI (that's "6", NOT "4" (IV). The BMW Part# for that fluid is 83220397114, but DON'T "Trust ME" :bigpimp: RATHER trust the label next to the Drain plug on your GM6 Transmission, which states use ONLY 83220397114, as shown in the attached photo of my 3/2007 build 328xi with GM6 transmission, upon which I have
Back then, GM was building the same transmission used in the E46 (transmission named A5S 360R) for other GM vehicles (transmission named 5L40E). They filled those 5L40E transmissions with Dexron III because it was the best fluid they had at the time. But Dexron III is a "short life" fluid. It degrades quickly.
Figure 1 All BMW E46 models utilize an oil level sensor (yellow arrow) located in the oil pan (red arrow). The sensor is prone to failure in two ways; it can fail electrically and it can leak oil.
